Ausgehend von der Diagnose einer gleichzeitigen Krise und Konjunktur der Erinnerung in der Ästhetik der Moderne diskutiert die Studie literarische und theoretische Texte Walter Benjamins als Dokumente, die diese Konstellation paradigmatisch formulieren, der literarischen Erinnerung jedoch auch neue Wege angesichts der Katastrophenerfahrungen des 20. Jahrhunderts aufweisen. Benjamin schließt dabei an die Traditionen der rhetorischen Mnemotechnik wie der Schriftmetaphorik des Gedächtnisses von Platon über Hegel zu Freud an. Diese Traditionslinien prägen seine bislang noch nicht umfassend erschlossene literarische Produktion aus Tagebüchern, Erzählungen, Sonetten usw. Gerade ein Text wie die intertextuell strukturierte und nie endgültig fixierte "Berliner Kindheit" ist aber als Absage an einen rekonstruktiven autobiographischen Duktus zu lesen. Deshalb stellt der Autor der 'Poetik der Erinnerung' die Konzeption einer 'Poetik der Destruktion' entgegen. Sie ergibt sich aus der Dekonstruktion der dichotomischen literarischen Erinnerungsfiguren von Allegorie und correspondance und vollzieht sich in einer an Proust und Benjamins Erzähltheorie anschließenden Poetik des 'gestischen' Schreibens. Benjamins "Passagen-Werk" kann dann gerade in seiner 'Unschreibbarkeit' als Manifest einer offenen, unabschließbaren Erinnerung gelesen werden: Nur in ihrer zerstörerischen Geste entgeht sie dem Vorwurf der Vereinnahmung und vermag zum stummen Eingedenken der schweigenden Opfer der Geschichte zu werden. Dergestalt prägt Benjamins Poetik auch den Diskurs über die (Un-)Möglichkeit der Erinnerung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, wie z.B. noch die gegenwärtige Debatte um das Holocaust-Mahnmal in Berlin.

Jean-Michel Palmier évoquait ainsi la nature des recherches qu'il effectuait sur Walter Benjamin : " je me suis efforcé de lire tous les livres que lui-même [Benjamin] a lus, de retracer minutieusement son itinéraire philosophique, politique et esthétique... ". Pour un familier des écrits du philosophe allemand, une telle déclaration laisse tout d'abord perplexe et dubitatif mais il suffit d'achever la lecture de cet ouvrage pour que s'évanouisse le moindre doute. Il paraît même hautement vraisemblable que l'auteur ait eu, de surcroît, à l'époque, une connaissance précise de la totalité des travaux - biographies, études, articles et commentaires - consacrés à l'œuvre benjaminienne. Cette lecture " historique et critique ", si elle ne propose pas une " nouvelle interprétation " ni une synthèse de l'œuvre, livre néanmoins les clés qui permettent de décrypter le prétendu hermétisme de Benjamin. Elle dissipe les malentendus et les clichés du " rabbin marxiste " victime de ses hésitations, prisonnier de ses contradictions, constamment " assis entre deux chaises ", réduisant en un dilemme insoluble l'alternative entre le matérialisme historique et la théologie ; surtout, elle comble les lacunes d'une connaissance fragmentaire, souvent paraphrasique et simplificatrice, trop fréquemment focalisée sur les mêmes thèmes (l'aura, le flâneur, le cinéma, la photographie ou les passages parisiens). Mieux encore : le mode de narration philosophique délibérément adopté par Jean-Michel Palmier livre, en réalité, bien plus qu'une interprétation nouvelle de Benjamin. En effet, rien de moins neutre ni d'objectif que cette " lecture " placée sous le signe de trois allégories majeures : le chiffonnier, l'Ange et le Petit Bossu. Une hotte, une paire d'ailes, une bosse : trois charges, lourdes du passé, de promesses non tenues, recelant malgré tout l'espoir d'un sauvetage, d'une rédemption pour les " vaincus " de l'histoire. In Benjamin's Library, Jane O. Newman offers, for the first time in any language, a reading of Walter Benjamin's notoriously opaque work, Origin of the German Tragic Drama that systematically attends to its place in discussions of the Baroque in Benjamin's day. Taking into account the literary and cultural contexts of Benjamin's work, Newman recovers Benjamin's relationship to the ideologically loaded readings of the literature and political theory of the seventeenth-century Baroque that abounded in Germany during the political and economic crises of the Weimar years.To date, the significance of the Baroque for Origin of the German Tragic Drama has been glossed over by students of Benjamin, most of whom have neither read it in this context nor engaged with the often incongruous debates about the period that filled both academic and popular texts in the years leading up to and following World War I. Armed with extraordinary historical, bibliographical, philological, and orthographic research, Newman shows the extent to which Benjamin participated in these debates by reconstructing the literal and figurative history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century books that Benjamin analyzes and the literary, art historical and art theoretical, and political theological discussions of the Baroque with which he was familiar. In so doing, she challenges the exceptionalist, even hagiographic, approaches that have become common in Benjamin studies. The result is a deeply learned book that will infuse much-needed life into the study of one of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century.

Les passages de Paris, lieux de mémoire de la « capitale du XIXe siècle », haut lieu du capitalisme triomphant, ont été au centre des recherches et réflexions de Walter Benjamin durant son exil en France dans les années 1930. Publié pour la première fois en 1982, le Livre des passages, oeuvre foisonnante et inachevée est devenu un véritable mythe, mine inépuisable de matériaux pour la recherche universitaire et lieu de convergence de tous les discours postmodernes. First published in 1982, «The Arcades Project», a profuse and unfinished work, has become a true myth. It is an inexhaustible mine of materials for academic research and a place of convergence of all postmodern discourses. This volume’s contributions explore a few of the countless reading and reflection perspectives opened by this atypical book. It is itself an «arcade» where the remains of a vanished past illuminate our present and announce the future.
